Philosophy question: ';Life isn't about finding yourself, life is about created yourself.'; True or false?

';Life isn't about finding yourself, life is about created yourself.'; - George Bernard Shaw.

Ever since I heard this quote I've been pondering whether this is true. I know it's a matter of opinion, really, but I have reasons supporting both sides.

Created:

Life might be about created yourself, because what you believe, feel, enjoy, etc. might be detirmined by the people that surround you, the places you go, and the things you do. And by putting yourself in situations, associating yourself with people, and doing these things, you are essentially creating yourself.

--or--

Life is about finding yourself:

You're born with your brain a certain way so that your personality is predetirmined. And the brain influences you to hang with the people you do, go to the places you go, and do the things you do.

What are your opinions, or which do you think it is?Philosophy question: ';Life isn't about finding yourself, life is about created yourself.'; True or false?
Shaw is making a distinction here between: (1) life as a kind of passive process of gradual self-discovery and growing self-awareness; and (2) life as an opportunity to exceed the limits of your birth (country, class, family), become your own person, and make your mark in the world.

I don’t think these are mutually exclusive, however. We all try to be who we want to be. We all have a vision of the perfect life we would like to have, and the perfect self we would be within it. But as we get older, we come to realize that having an understanding of who we are, of our strengths and weakness, our talents and our failings, is pretty fundamental to achieving anything at all. You can exceed the limits of your birth, but you can't really escape from your own personality. The more self-knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to achieve your goals.Philosophy question: ';Life isn't about finding yourself, life is about created yourself.'; True or false?
You are not gonna find anything you don't already know you have about yourself. And the surrounding that affects you is only going to change how you perceive them and only about them, your principle still and only belongs to you. You see the world through your eyes, the world live inside you, so ';your'; life is what you created yourself.
life is doing of what gives us peace. so it may have different meaning for different persons. there are different targets of their own for everyone. so either creating or finding ,life is life. creating and finding have same meaning of achieving the goal of full-awareness of yourself.
Life is definitely about creating yourself.
i believe life will be what you make out of it because of what you decide to do…………sO i agree with the quote.........8)
This sounds incredibly familiar-- oh, yeah ... Nature Vs. Nurture argument.

I forgot who said this quote-- I think it was john locke-- or someone... that we are are born a clean slate that's painted on by the world, like a mural. The argument claiming ';nurture';-- that we are influenced into who we are by our environment.

You've already stated the opposing argument ';Nature'; that we are born who we are. No questions asked.

(there's a documentary out there somewhere that talks about it. I watched it. I'll help you find it if you're interested).

--------------------------------------…

Honestly, in my opinion, its a balance of nature and nurture leaning more towards ';nurture'; (again, in my opinion). We are born with traits from our relatives-- but who we are ultimately rests on how we we're raised, how our environment influenced us, media .. etc.

But, if it was ALL nurture how would you explain the people that grow up with domestic abuse in the middle of the projects-- yet, end up valedictorian of their class?

Again, its a balance.
